Scholarships

The list below is only a small list of the many, many, MANY scholarships that are available. Here are some other tips to keep in mind when seeking scholarships for post-secondary education:

1. TALK TO A COUNSELOR! I have compiled a list of local/state/national scholarships (see below) to help you get started, but don't see this as the ONLY scholarships out there. One of the best places to look is to check with the colleges/vocational schools you are interested in and see what kind of scholarships they have available. Also, check with the department(s) you are looking at (such as the music department or the dairy science department) at those schools to see if they have further opportunities to offer in your interest area. Make an appointment to talk with me if you aren't sure where to start your scholarship search.

2. ASK AROUND! Many businesses, organizations, clubs, etc. offer scholarship opportunities.

3. READ CAREFULLY! Make sure to read the criteria for each scholarship carefully. Each organization offering a scholarship has a set idea as to what students they are looking for, so make sure you fit the bill. There is no sense applying for every scholarship out there if you don't match what they want, so save yourself time and effort by only applying for scholarships that match your abilities, interests, and experiences.

4. FOLLOW DEADLINES. It is very important to meet the deadline for each scholarship you apply for. If possible, send it a little early to give yourself a little time to account for postal and other unexpected delays (like, you fall deathly ill with malaria the morning the application is due!!!). Seriously though, always try to work on scholarships plenty ahead of the due date so that you have lots of time to get any necessary recommendations, signatures, transcripts, etc. in time.

5. BEWARE OF SCAMS! If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! You should not need to pay a company to find you scholarships...there are TONS of them out there for you to find FOR FREE! Try sites like Fast Web or Sallie Mae for FREE online search engines for scholarships that may apply to you.
