  TIPS!!
Apply for Federal financial aid before seeking other loans...you may qualify for grant money (money you don't have to pay back!). Even if you don't qualify for grants, federally-backed loans usually have friendlier terms then most private loans.

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or FAFSA) after January 1st of your senior year of high school. It is a good idea to wait until you and your parents have filed your income taxes before filing the FAFSA, since you will need this information. However, DO file the FAFSA as soon as you have your tax information to be eligible for as much aid as possible. Also, contact your post-secondary school's financial aid office to enquire about any financial aid deadlines you may need to meet!

DO NOT pay to apply for federal financial aid for post-secondary education! There are many sites out there that promise to make filing the FAFSA an easier process for a "small fee"...BEWARE! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is just that...FREE. You do not need to pay for help filing the FAFSA. If you need assistance filling out the forms, just ask! The Federal government provides free online and telephone assistance, as does the Education Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC is a great resource for all sorts of financial aid questions.
